Compostable Abaca Fiber Dish Sponge

ABACA DISHWASHING SCRUBBIE
Handmade + all natural + 100% compostable

A conventional dish sponge is usually made of two layers of polymers. The softer layer is made of polyurethane (or some other foamed plastic polymers), while the thinner dark green layer is made of a harder polyethylene mesh. These are all petroleum-based materials that trickle down drainages— leaching microplastics out into waterways whenever you do the dishes.
Kitchen sponges are one of the most disposable cleaning tools in the household. They are usually replaced once every two to five weeks. Since non-biodegradable oil-based sponges are neither recyclable, nor compostable, they are a common landfill pollutant.
Explore biodegradable cleaning tools such as this locally-made sponge we carry by Knitty Gritty by Chiara. The abaca-fiber dish scrubbie is a hand-knitted, purely compostable alternative to plastic kitchen sponges. With a pocket to fit the hand in, the abaca sponge is not just environment-conscious in make, but also ergonomic in design. It won't lather as nicely as a plastic kitchen sponge would, but will clean your dishes just as well. Bubbles are just overrated pockets of air anyway.
One order is inclusive of one compostable abaca dish sponge. Please select a variant/style below.

The abaca-fiber dish sponge is a compostable alternative to plastic kitchen sponges. Hand-knittted by animal rescuers in Laguna, the sponge lasts anywhere between 3 and 5 months (depending on use), and can be composted in any home composting system. Abaca, a locally grown renewable resource, also absorbs more carbon dioxide than its emissions, and completely biodegrades in a short amount of time.

PS: The "pocket" variant of this item can also be used as a soap saver/body scrub.

PACKAGING

Please expect all items to be packaged in very minimal used / recycled / secondhand paper bags or cardboard boxes. We try to minimize our carbon footprint where we can, when we can, and as much as we can, and avoid procuring new packaging materials for our products.

All single-use packaging materials, no matter how "eco-friendly," take an inordinate amount of resources (e.g. water, fuel, electricity, trees, etc.) to manufacture. This is why we prefer to solicit used paper bags and boxes via Buhay Zero Waste Preloved, an online decluttering and dumpster-diving platform that we run.Our parcels won't always look pretty, but they have a much much smaller impact on the environment than parcels that use brand new "eco-friendly" packaging materials.
