BOKASHI FERMENTATION STARTER KIT

Bokashi is a means to process organic waste into nutrient-rich soil. This Bokashi Starter Kit contains all of the necessary tools you need in order to be able to ferment your kitchen scraps at home. Once fermented, you can compost your fermented kitchen scraps indoors in a large container with soil, or outdoors, by digging it into the ground. All kitchen scraps turn into nutrient-rich loam soil within a matter of weeks.

No odours, no pests, and can be done completely indoors.

One order is inclusive of one 20L (38cm x 34cm) airtight fermentation bucket with a cover, one faucet attachment set with o-rings, one inner strainer bucket, and one kilo of Bokashi bran.

Please see product how-tos and shipping information in the tabs below. As this product is bulky, we recommend choosing the "I will pick up or book shipping myself" shipping option upon checkout.

We've seen, used, and tested a variety of Bokashi buckets from different suppliers over the last few years and we'll have to say that these are the best in terms of quality, ergonomics, and also at staying airtight. (Otherwise, we wouldn't be carrying these.)

Your Bokashi Fermentation Kit should include:

  • One airtight fermentation bucket with a cover
Unlike other Bokashi buckets available in the market, these are not produced specifically for the purpose of Bokashi. These are repurposed buckets, and used to contain food/food grade items only. The goal after all is to help with the planet's waste crisis, not manufacture more plastic.

    Vol - 20L
    Height - 38cm
    Diameter - 34cm

  • One faucet attachment set with o-rings
The faucet screws onto the bottom of the Bokashi bucket. (See above photo.) This is for draining Bokashi tea. Please make sure to screw the faucet onto the bucket with one o-ring on either side of the bucket's walls.

  • One inner strainer bucket
This is inserted into the Bokashi bucket to collect food waste, so the actual outer bucket stays completely airtight. There are drain holes to allow the liquid from the food waste to go to the bottom of the bucket. There is also a larger hole in the center of the bucket for easy removal. (Ergonomically designed! Yay!)

  • One kilo of Bokashi bran
Bokashi bran is inoculated with microorganisms and sprinkled onto food waste. Unlike other Bokashi products available in the market, you will only need 1 - 2 teaspoons of this bran for every kilo of food waste you produce. This product comes from the manufacturer packaged in single-use plastic. This to protect the product from moisture, contamination, and saprophytic insects. We are offering our patrons the option to personally pick the product up and bring their own containers. If you wish to do this, you may select the "I will pick the product up" shipping option during checkout. We will schedule the date and time of pickup with you, transfer the bag's contents into your container, and assume full responsibility over the reuse/recycling of its packaging.

Bokashi is a means to process to organic waste into nutrient-rich soil. Food waste is deposited into a controlled environment (i.e. a Bokashi bucket), and "good bacteria" are introduced to it via a microbe-inoculated bran. These microbes break the waste down. There are no putrid smells produced, no pests involved, and composting time is cut in half. The entire Bokashi process and system can be done completely indoors.

How? Here's a quick run-through:
  1. Mix a handful of Bokashi bran with chopped up food waste.
  2. Place food waste in Bokashi bucket and press down to get rid of air pockets.
  3. Seal the Bokashi bucket tightly. (Make sure it clicks shut.)
  4. Collect Bokashi tea from the faucet.
  5. Repeat steps 1 to 4 until the bucket is full. Once full, leave the bucket alone to ferment for two weeks.
  6. Compost your Bokashi ferment by dumping it in a large container with soil.
